The C-5A 'Galaxy', of the 60th Air Mobility Wing became the Military Air Command's first operational squadron to fly the new transport aircraft on February 6, 1972. the wing added a second C-5 squadron, when the 22nd Military Airlift Squadron activated at Travis AFB in California. The C-5's nose assembly raised for loading and unloading.
