Porcupine (Erethizon dorsatum) have over 30,000 quills. Coarse, dark guard hairs cover the 1-2.5 inch long quills. Porcupines born at the Red River Zoo are living at other zoos throughout the country; one is even living at a zoo in the Netherlands! Porcupines are primarily nocturnal (active at night). They do not hibernate.
