A-10A 'Warthog' from the 442FW AFRES, AFB Whiteman, Missouri. #90-122 flown by Lt.Col. Roger Disrud.
Disrud's unit, the 442nd Fighter Wing out of Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo., won two of four possible trophies, one for his' 'Top Gun" performance and the other for the performance of his unit's munitions team. He credited the A-10's success with a new computer system that has been installed to upgrade the planes.
Disrud and the other pilots in his unit began training for the event in July. By August, they were flying two missions a day over the Smoky Hill Weapons Range. "We practiced here because the terrain was similar to the conditions in Nevada," he said. Disrud, assistant deputy commander for operations for the Air Force's 442nd Fighter Wing unit, teaches at Richards-Gebaur Air Force Base, Mo. and is in the Air Force Reserves.
