A wealthy American expatriate, Stewart studied with Jean-Léon Gérôme who taught at the École for more than fifty years. His Pollice Verso of 1872 hangs in a nearby gallery. Many Americans studied with the French master, though Mary Cassatt had to take lessons privately from him, as women were denied admission to the venerable French institution until 1897. Not only were those women who sought training in private ateliers often charged higher tuition than that paid by their male counterparts, they also received reduced instruction.
