The tub handle in my bathroom cracked. This was due to a bad Moen 1225B Cartridge, which was so stiff you could barely turn the handle. I couldn't get the old cartridge out, 40 years of use meant it wasn't going to be easy. The replacement cartridge came with a plastic tool, which broke. I bought a Cartridge puller at Home Depot, it pulled the stem out of the cartridge but the sleeve was still in the body. I used an old plumbers trick. I got a 1/2 tap and threaded the sleeve. I made a tool with a 3x1/2 bolt. A stack of 1-inch washers as spacers, a 1/2 washer to hold the 1/2 nut. Tread the tool to the sleeve. Then use a big wrench on the 1/2 nut to work the sleeve out of the valve body. Problem solved. Install the new Moen 1225B Cartridge and Handle. I also tried a #5 extractor, which didn't work. I also used some CLR, which helped. The retaining clip broke when I tried to put it back in.
