Imperial Japanese Army Air Force
The Imperial Japanese Army Air Force was the air branch of the Japanese Army. IN 1940 the Army had over 1,300 combat aircraft. Their main priority was to provide close ground support, interdiction, reconnaissance, and air cover for the Army's ground forces. It also conducted bombings of Chinese and Burmese cities even though it did not have the doctrine or roper aircraft for a strategic bombing campaign. During the last months of the war the Army Air Force along with Imperial Navy Air Service conducted Kamikaze attacks against Allied ships and attempted to defend the Japanese home islands from the American bombing campaign.
