The underslung air intake (with splitter plate) was placed so it was rearward of the nose but forward enough to minimize air flow losses and reduce aerodynamic drag. The original Pratt & Whitney F100-PW-200 afterburning turbofan jet engine was rated at 23,830 lbf thrust.
