If Shanley has a rival it's Bismarck St. Mary’s. The Deacons were fired up to host the Saints in the first game of the regular season. The last time they met, November 2013, the Saints won a 12-10 victory in the 2A semifinals. This evening started warm and ended cool as a cold front moved it in. You could say the same for the Saints. They dominated the first half. The Deacons couldn't find or make any holes in Bismarck's defense. Conversely the Deacons had trouble stopping the Saints running game. It's always hard when the teams are willing to run on fourth down. St. Mary's took a 14-0 lead at the half. The wind picked up and work against Shanley in the third quarter. But Shanley made some adjustments and prevented St. Mary's from any further scoring. In the Fourth Quarter the wind was with the Deacons. The Deacon student section was still fired up and making a lot noise as were the parents and other fans. I had yelled myself hoarse.

Danny Stasch pulled down an interception. And later finished with a two-yard run to the end zone. Quarterback Matt Burd started a trick play. He took the snap, looked to run, handed off to Tre Fort, who appeared to run a sweep, but pulled up and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to Danny Stasch. With 5 minutes, 17 seconds left to play, Shanley's fans erupted as the game was tied. Shanley marched down the field again. Sean told me Shanley switched running gaps. This got the offense moving again. Both Matt and his older brother Zach were having good games. Matt Wolbaum attempted a 34-yard field goal that went wide. St. Mary’s drew a roughing the kicker penalty. A 29-yard attempt failed due to a high snap. Matt Wolaum got the first down by running the ball. A third attempt (22 yards) suffered from another bad snap. But instead of throwing an incomplete pass to stop the clock and give him a fourth chance, he threw it into the end zone where it was intercepted by St. Mary's. The Saints let the clock run down and forced overtime. Shanley won the toss and scored a touchdown, but so did St. Mary's. Then St. Mary's scored, followed by Shanley. However those bad snaps bit the Deacons- the extra point was missed, and the Saints won 28 to 27.

I didn't bring my camera bag, so when it suddenly grew very dark at half-time I was stuck with my slow zoom lens. Sean played on the punting squad, but they didn't see much action. He was only on the field for four plays. Still it was a very exciting game if you stayed to the end. Hopefully the Deacons will catch the Saints in the playoffs this fall when the Deacons have their complete roster playing.
